The last couple of weeks or so have made a tremendous difference to gardens, as we might expect, given some warmer weather at last! All kinds of blossom are around us – on fruit trees, wild shrubs, and ornamental trees. I somehow never tire of apple blossom, though. The delicate blend of magenta and white complemented by the green of the leaves, and of course the scent, which I sadly can’t share in a photograph!
I’ve always loved to see magnolia flowers in spring, but only recently have I come across this stellated kind, which also has a lovely scent. Most flowers can help to lift one’s mood, but this one appeals because of its delicate structure – it seems to symbolise a certain gentleness, somehow. It is also unbelievably white, almost dazzling by day!
Today, in Derbyshire, it rained. That’s not always a bad thing. Misty rain adds a strange, almost surreal, depth to pictures, especially at certain times of the year. Tree shapes take on a depth caused by the relative distance of trees from the camera. When you are actually there, alone, you can experience a sense of quiet awe.
I’ve always loved flowers that have a scent, so I was pleased to find this hyacinth in flower today. I love this colour, too, although it’s hard to have a favourite colour when it comes to hyacinths. I’m afraid I can’t give you the scent over the internet! Lots of other flowers are coming out now, which is great for lifting the mood.
I found this little primrose only today, and decided it was worth a photo. I think it’s amazing how flowers like this, having such delicate structures as they do, open out after such severe weather. It seems like a triumphal display when it happens.
