Once a year, in town or city
And around the countryside
Everyone prepares for feasting
On the day of Christmastide.
Special food, and drink as well
All the supermarkets sell.
When the day at last arriveth
For the tables to be spread
Many ‘mums’ are working madly
For their families to be fed.
‘Merry Christmas’ each will yawn –
(Ovens start in early morn.)
When the festive fare is eaten
And the plates are cleared away
We salute those who’ve been busy
On this Christmas ‘holiday.’
“Well done, Mum!” And she’ll reply:
“That’s all right – I’ll wash, you dry…”
This post was prompted by the ‘100 word challenge’ here.
The appropriate tune (from a carol) should be obvious!
A hint: see the first line.
Cool! Once in Royal Davids City by any chance?
Very funny – and true !
You’ve guessed correctly!
Wonderful – although I think she should be let off washing and drying completely. I’m beginning to see a theme here amongst the women 😉
This is great. Well done for writing to one of the more traditional carols- and keeping the rhyme and rhythm so well.
I went for pure daftness!
Another gem! Noticed that no ones chosen the same song yet, which is great. I’d better get cracking or they’ll all be taken. Oh well, plenty to go round
I’m a little clueless on some of the more traditional carols, so could you give me a hint? I like the poetry though.
Very well written – poor martyred mums – but like Midlife am not sure about the washing up. What are partners and children – and guests – for?
Interesting thing that the tunes for Hark! The Herald Angels Sing and Once In Royal David’s City are pretty similar… Just the length of the verse is different… must try and keep to the right one when I sing this, otherwise I run out of words!
Great! I like the first line particularly and “ovens start in early morn”. Just what’s going to happen!
Women should be let off all washing up if they have made Christmas Dinner. This is a very clever version.
Thanks, all of you, for visiting. The last line is, of course, a cue for solicitous family and friends to volunteer for the whole job, and put mum in an armchair with another sherry!
Great lyrics! However, I’m at one with the person who said Mum shouldn’t be doing any washing up OR drying after that marathon!
Great job!
I’m with Anna on the washing and drying! : )
I loved that! It fitted really well and I agree with Alison. Whoever cooked it, escapes washing it all up in my opinion! Glad you’re doing the challenges, it’s fun isn’t it! @Chaoskay
A very traditional theme with good humour at the end – I enjoyed that!
Oh excellent Phil! I’m so glad you have remembered the other bit of the lunch – washing up!! Thank you so much for joining in the silliness!
Wonderful! It fit the tune very well – great job! 😀
Phil you’re amazing! That is really fantastic! 😀
Nicely done. These should be recorded for a modern Christmas album!
Very clever, I love her last line. Perfect for the family Christmas. x
Brilliant! Although in our house it goes a bit more like “I’ll load the dishwasher and you can collapse into a stuffed coma until tea time.” 😉 You’ve captured it so well Phil! #chucklemums.
Love these challenges Phil, you’re so good at them. This will be me on Boxing Day, sadly, but only for 4 adults and 2 kids so I’m sure I’ll be alright. Kind of. Thank you for linking up to the last #Chucklemums, it’s been a blast! Look out for a possible reincarnation next year…
Very clever, as always! I enjoyed this very much, thanks for joining us at #chucklemums
